Story

Mushrooms have two parts. Above the ground, the cap-shaped body is called the fruiting body. Below the ground, fungi build a complex subterranean network known as the mycelial network, or the fungal mat. This network connects the roots of different plants, enabling the sharing of nutrients and information, and fostering a form of ecological mutual support. If cities and rural areas are the forests humans inhabit, then organic human communities are the fruiting bodies within that forest. Guided by the spirit of the mycelial network, I'm drawn to practices that grow from the ground up and carry a sense of life and vitality.

Colors

Just before early spring arrived, beneath the rain trees along the street, I saw the most dazzling green in the world. In the afternoons they would say, "Let's go back to Shambhala," yet the Shambhala I know has never been there. It lives within me, beneath that rain tree. In that moment, I realized my life had gained another color—the green of that rain tree. Sharp and austere glacial blue, towering and radiant green—glaciers and rain trees are the colors of my life.
